This handbook is designed to guide you and your athlete through a successful and enriching season. Your support is essential. Whether you are cheering from the stands, volunteering at tournaments, or helping behind the scenes, your involvement directly enhances your child’s experience.

Parent Involvement & Volunteering
White River Wrestling Club is a family-centered organization, and your involvement is essential to the success of our program. We rely heavily on parent volunteers to help with events, tournaments, and daily operations throughout the season.
Parent involvement on the mat must be approved by the Head Coach. Any parent wishing to help on the mat or during a tournament MUST obtain their Wrestling Leadership card. To obtain a Wrestling Leadership Card you will need to go to USAWMembership.com
If you did not purchase the volunteer buy-out during registration, you are required to complete at least 4 hours of volunteer service during the season.
Opportunities include:
- Tournament set-up and take-down
- Weigh-ins
- Timekeeping and scorekeeping during Wrestle Offs
- Table Help during tournaments
- Concessions
- Entry/admissions
- Other event support tasks
(Personally assisting only your child/children on the mat does not count towards volunteer hours. Wishing to help on the mat must be approved.)
This is a team effort when your child joins the team, so do you! Your time and support make a real difference in the quality of the experience we can offer all athletes.
Hygiene & Skin Infection Prevention
Wrestling involves close contact. Good hygiene is crucial to prevent infections:
- Shower immediately after practice or competitions using antibacterial soap and a mesh scrub.
- Disinfect all gear (singlets, towels, shoes) after each use.
- Clean mats and surfaces thoroughly after every session.
Common Infection: Tinea Corporis (Ringworm)
- A red, circular, scaly rash with a clear center
- Highly contagious and requires prompt treatment with antifungal creams or oral medication
- Wrestlers may return to practice 3 days after starting treatment
Practice Expectations
- Be early: Arrive dressed and ready before start time
- Be respectful: Give full attention to coaches and teammates
- Be present: No phones or gaming devices
- Be involved: Support the team even if injured
- Be responsible: Prioritize academics and manage time wisely
Equipment Requirements
- Singlets provided based on program (CAPS vs. Club)
- Wrestling shoes & headgear are required for all tournaments
- A limited supply of used gear may be available
Additional Tournaments
Beyond regular league events, many wrestlers attend USA-sanctioned tournaments. These are optional and at your expense, but highly encouraged. Check USA Wrestling for schedules and registration details.
Challenge Policy (Wrestle-Offs)
Purpose: Determine Varsity, JV and Exhibition rankings for dual meets and postseason tournaments.
Process:
- Initial rankings based on coach assessments and past season performance
- Wrestlers may challenge to move up in rank
- Must win two consecutive matches to claim a Varsity spot
- Matches consist of three rounds:
- Ages 9+: 1.5 min / 1 min / 1 min
- Ages 8 & under: 1 min each round
- No parents are allowed in the room during challenge matches
What if my wrestler doesn’t make a Varsity or JV position?
Whether your child makes Varsity, or JV, is not important! Your child will get plenty of wrestling during the season with all the tournaments and dual meets available. The important thing is that each wrestler will gain valuable experience in the sport of wrestling AND will be having a ton of fun doing it.
Qualifying Weigh-Ins
To be eligible for postseason:
- Wrestlers must have 4 qualifying weigh-ins
- Must occur during Round Robins, Dual Meets, Tough Guy, and Holiday. You must wrestle one match during a round robin in order for your weight to count.
- Only Varsity and JV wrestlers qualify at dual meets
- Matches must be in the same weight class (or one class below)
Match Day Tips
- Arrive in your singlet for weigh-ins
- Cut fingernails the night before
- Eat AFTER weigh-ins
- Stay hydrated and bring snacks/water
